Costa Rica~ Sugar Addicts

And we're not talking about Patti here. Hummingbirds eat up to 12 times their body weight each day in flower nectar (aka sugar) with an occasional bug thrown in for protein. No wonder they are so hyper. They can fly at speeds over 15 mph, hover in mid-air and even fly backwards. No wonder they are so hard to photography!

Thankfully, several places we visited had hummingbird feeders which made it possible (but just barely) to photograph these hyper little beings.

Even though they were not happy about sharing the sweet nectar there was not anything they could do when the white-nosed Coati and the Olingo decided to stop by for an afternoon snack.

Fortunately hummers need to spend a few seconds quietly digesting their food which gave the camera just enough time to focus on the bird (not the background) before they flew off for their next meal.

  1. Now those are stunningly beautiful birds! Don't they also have them in exotic Haiku?
